6th Grade Digital Etiquette Podcast Script
ALL: IT’S A GREAT DAY FOR A PODCAST!
AMINA: The Wilson School 6th grade computer class is studying what it means to be a good Digital Citizen. We are learning about Digital Etiquette, which is a set of rules on how to behave online. Another word for Digital Etiquette is Netiquette. This word comes from a combination of the words Internet and Etiquette.
Mark: Having good Digital Etiquette means treating people on the Internet the same way you’d like to be treated. Ask permission before posting pictures or information about others. Consider your audience, use polite language and correct grammar. Don’t forget that you are dealing with REAL people.
Terrance: Communications on line can be tricky. Make sure that you re-read what you are typing before sending it. Abbreviations and slang might be confusing to some people. Be sure not to type in all capital letters. Typing in all capital letters is the same as SHOUTING in real life. And, Never send anything to anyone in ANGER…remember once you type and send it, it is there forever!
Shariya: Since people cannot see your face or hear your voice when you type a message online, sometimes it is difficult to express your emotions when you are texting, IMing or emailing. One way to show how you feel is by using Emoticons. These are little pictures, like smiley faces, that help the reader understand your emotions, not just your words.
Evan: Even if you try to communicate appropriately, it is possible to run into people who don’t use good netiquette. We call these people TROLLS. They are people who use their words not to communicate, but to bully or start arguments online. A nasty message is called a FLAME and when people send them back and forth, it is called a FLAME WAR! The internet is not private, don’t type anything that you might be ashamed of later, use proper manners, don’t be a TROLL!
ALL: Remember to use your Netiquette every time you go online! And, thanks for listening!
